A type of new media that doesn't currently exist is a physically virtual world. Unlike plain virtual worlds that currently exist such as Second Life, these would be different because it wouldn't just be people sitting on a computer and playing a game, they would actually be able to physically move in this virtual world. It's kind of like what you see in sci-fi, futuristic, dystopian movies; people lie down, put on a headset and they're transported into a virtual world. While something like that doesn't sound realistic yet, a step back from it could be having people use virtual reality headsets and have remote controls that allow them to move around and perform actions. This could be handy for social media allowing people to connect in a virtual world where they can hang out. It would allow for people that have friends or family that live far away to be able to spend time with one another while feeling as if they are close. It can also workout for business purposes such as to hold virtual meetings; if someone can't make it into work, they can be there virtually, or if you need to meet with a client in a different country you can use it for that as well without having to travel to them. There are a lot of ways that this new media could be used if it was perfected.

  1. This definitely reminds me of sci-fi movies like The Matrix. Putting a headset on and being in a virtual world that does not actually exist, but having the ability to still feel things as if they were real is surreal. I also agree with how these virtual worlds would be used, and I would love to be able to meet up with people who are extremely far away from me in just a few seconds. Maybe workplaces could also become virtual and the need for physical companies may drop, opening up space for more houses or apartments to be built, the worlds population is only growing after all. Interesting idea!

  2. There are so many versions of this idea in the media through movies like Ready, Player One or shows like Sword Art Online. Although, in these scenarios, virtual reality isn't always the safest thing, I do think this is a great idea that would really promote interaction and connection between people to a much greater level. I think as long as this is something that is somewhat regulated and limited, this can be a lot of fun and bring a lot of people joy.
